Mississippi Poetry and Writing Groups.

He was crippled in a fall several years ago and suffered a stroke in 2023. Your support will help cover costs of this site and provide more frequent updates.
Beth Ann Fennelly was appointed Mississippi State Poet Laureate in 2016. Her term was set to expire in 2020. (We have been unable to find out who has since been appointed to replace her in 2020).The First State Poet Laureate for Mississippi was Maude Willard Leet Prenshaw, appointed in 1963. In 1973, Louise Moss Montgomery was named laureate She was followed by Winifred Hamrick Farrar in 1978. All three poets laureate served lifetime terms. Beginning with Natasha Trethewey, Mississippi poets laureate now serve four-year terms.Former Mississippi State Poet Laureates include

The Mississippi Arts Commission, or MAC supports Mississippi artists working in all genres, including poetry and writing. They provide grants and programs for Mississippi writers and artists. Please see the link above for details.
Founded in 1932, The prestigious Mississippi Poetry Society or MPS is as their mission statement reads a group of professional and aspiring poets dedicated to promoting poetry, educating the public, assisting our poet and writer members in areas of greater writing skill and publication awareness.
The groups activities include: meetings (when possible), readings, workshops, contests, festivals and community outreach. There are many local chapters in Mississippi cities of the MPS. Please see the above link for information on chapters and membership information.
For the past several years, thousands of https://arts.ms.gov/programs/education-initiatives/poetry-out-loud/ high school students have participated in the Poetry Out Loud State recitation competitions, sponsored by the Mississippi Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Your high school is invited to participate.
Poetry Out Loud is a wonderful program for students. The program helps the develop Stage and speaking skills, confidence and a love of poetry. Poetry really needs to be spoken to truly be enjoyed. Poetry Slams are events in which adults and students read and perform poetry for awards and prizes. There are many local events and even a National competition. Check with your local poetry group for the nearest Slam event and Slam schedules.
The University of Mississippi Writing Project provides classes and resources for students, teachers and Mississippi writers. Please see the link above for more information.
Hub City Writers is a group in Hattiesburg that welcomes writers of all genres. They meet, when possible at The University of Southern Mississippi. USM is located at the corner of HWY 49 and Hardy Street in Hattiesburg. The Art Gallery is located just inside Cook Library. Please see above link for more information.
The Mississippi Writers Guild has chapters in many Mississippi cities. The Guild provides contests, resources and conferences for Mississippi Writers. Please see the Guild for a group in your city. The Mississippi Writers and Musicians is a group formed to honor Mississippi writers, musicians and actors. It is a great resource for anyone wanting to learn about Mississippi Writers and Musicians. Please see above link for more information.
The Mississippi Christian Writers Association provides resources and when possible, conferences for writers in all genres of Christian writing including: poetry, music, songs, short stories, articles, books, newsletters, bulletins, and greeting Cards. Steven Robert Heine is an American poet and author. He has spent much of his life supporting poetry projects and events. He is the author of 8 volumes of poetry. In 2011 he was seriously injured in a fall that left him in great pain and almost unable to walk. He suffered a stroke in 2023. Heine receives no disability and relies on a small pension and retirement income. He is no longer able to make public appearances.

Steven Robert Heine is a West Coast poet & author. He has traveled extensively through the United States, including trips to **Mississippi **. He has spent his life promoting poetry; serving as founder for many poetry contests. He is the author of fifteen books, including poetry, history and his own short auto-biographies.

Heine was crippled in a fall in 2011 and now makes very few public appearances.
